Ultimatum for Jajmau tanneries

13/09/2010
The Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) has issued a 15-day ultimatum to 80 tanneries in the Jajmau area of Kanpur. Tanning companies have two weeks in which to adapt their operations to meet all environmental requirements or face closure.

Other tanneries in the area could face similar action in the weeks ahead. If the tannery owners affected refuse to close down, the authorities have said they may force closure by cutting off supplies of water and energy.

The relationship between the leather industry in Kanpur and the local authorities has come under intense pressure this year. The local government has already asked
65 of tanneries in Jajmau to move to a new site at Unnao, but this project was put on hold after farmers in Unnao refused to sell their land to allow a new industrial site to be built.

There were raids on some tanneries, accused of polluting the River Ganges, during August and in September the local authorities banned the use of salted hides in local leather production.
