Fashion world wakes up to fish leather

A special department set up in Brazil to promote sustainable development in the Amazon regions is promoting exotic leather from fish skins as a growth option.

São Paulo-based fashion brand Iódice has agreed to become part of a project called AMA (the letters stand for Love the Amazon) and has incorporated fish leather into some of its belts, bags and shoes.

Rio Grande do Sul-based exotic leather supplier Péltica has said that it, too, is interested in incorporating leather from river fish into its product offering, which already includes leather from salmon, tilapia and acoupa weakfish (all seafish).

Government estimates indicate that as much as one tonne of fish skin is being discarded every day in the Amazon regions of Brazil.
