Bangladesh responds to anthrax outbreak

10/09/2010
Officials in Bangladesh have set up checkpoints to test cattle for anthrax after an outbreak of the disease was confirmed.

The outbreak coincided with the Eid festival to mark the end of Ramadan, resulting in a steep increase in meat consumption in Bangladesh. With 400 people infected with the human form of the disease, the authorities hope the checkpoints will help stop meat from infected cattle from coming into the human food supply chain.

A director at the ministry of health, Mahmudur Rahman, told the AFP news agency: "The number of cases could soar. In one district 66 people were infected in one day."

Officials have described the outbreak as the biggest in the country's history.
