BSE case confirmed in the Netherlands

08/09/2010
A new case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), also known as mad cow disease, has come to light in the Netherlands. A 10-year-old cow there has tested positive for the first time in more than two years.

The animal tested positive at a slaughterhouse in Tilburg, the Dutch government has confirmed. A government spokesperson told Reuters meat from the animal was withdrawn from the food chain after a first test proved positive before a second test confirmed the result.

All cows sent to slaughter in the Netherlands are tested for BSE and meat from them only enters the food supply chain after results come back negative. The most recent positive test before now was in May 2008.
