Ecuador needs an ostrich tannery

The ostrich industry is growing in Ecuador, but a vet in the South American country who has become an expert on rearing the birds says infrastructure has to improve if companies are to make the most of the opportunities available, with a tannery specialising in producing ostrich leather one of the innovations he would like to see.

Entrepreneurs introduced ostriches to Ecuador around 15 years ago. Now, according to vet Marco Morán, the country has a population of around 7,000 birds spread over 30 ranches and farms. Mr Morán has told local media that important benefits would come from setting up modern tanning and slaughterhouse facilities to capitalise fully on market opportunities.

He said one producer he is involved with in La Colina had recently introduced a line of ostrich meat sausage products that were proving very popular with consumers in nearby Guayaquil. “The demand is there,” he said.
