New problems with Uttar Pradesh proposals

There are new developments in the moves by the state government of Uttar Pradesh to move 65 tanneries from the Jajmau district of Kanpur to a new site at Unnao.

Farmers in Unnao have refused to sell their land to the authorities. The Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Corporation (UPSIDC) offered new sites at Auraiya and Farrukhabad, but the tanneries concerned have turned the proposal down because the sites are too far away from Kanpur and because of cost.

The managing director of UPSIDC, SK Verma, has told local media: “We had some problems in acquiring the land at Unnao and so we recommended two other sites to the government. He said they have 200 acres of land at Dibiyapur and 180 acres at Khemchepur which is sufficient to set up an industrial park in any of the districts.”

His organisation said it was still waiting for a formal response from local tanning industry associations.
