Arrests for selling fake leathergoods

01/09/2010
Complaints from an unnamed European leathergoods brand over intellectual property infringements in Hong Kong have paid off.

The Hong Kong government has confirmed that customs officers in the Special Administrative Region have arrested three men and 23 women, and seized 4,500 counterfeit leather items worth HK$5 million (around $650,000).

Officers raided 17 shops after receiving a complaint from a trademark owner. The sellers had put the trademark on their products without the consent of the copyright owner. There were claims that the goods had been imported from Europe, but the customs authorities have confirmed that they were not made in Europe.
