Tannery receives visit from president

Workers at the Kindale tannery have been protesting since early July about the number of employees laid off during the winter downturn this year. Only 50 of a total workforce of around 325 were kept on over the winter months.
At the start of August, 35 more employees returned to work and the tannery's Angolan owners said they would step this number up over the coming weeks.
President Mújica was passing on his return to Montevideo from an Independence Day celebration and asked to speak to the workers. Uruguayan media said the president was familiar with the situation at the tannery and at a nearby packer company, Frigoríficos Florida, similarly affected. "This is a difficult time of year because there is not much livestock available," he said. "So that has an effect on companies like yours."
He said he hoped to boost Uruguay's meat exports by shipping more to the US and Europe.
