US beef production falls

Commercial production of red meat in the US totalled 1.8 million tonnes in July, 4% less than the 1.9 million tonnes produced in July 2009, according to a monthly report from the USDA.
Beef production at one million tonnes was 2% lower than during the same month last year. Cattle slaughter totalled 2.9 million head, down 1% year-on-year, and the average weight fell by 4.1 pounds compared with the previous year to 577.42 pounds. Calf slaughter totalled 75,100 head, down 6% compared with July 2009. The average live weight increased by 9.5 pounds to 113.9 pounds.
For the January to July period, commercial production of red meat was 12.6 million tons, 2% less than in 2009. Beef production was down by 1%.
