Good and bad news for Chinese tanners

23/08/2010

There is good news for leather firms in Pingyu County, Hunan, China. Up until five years ago there was no leather production to speak of in the region, while now around 10 million pieces of leather are produced each year. A new leather industrial zone has been established in the area, with output value now totalling 1.9 billion yuan ($279.4 million).

However, there is bad news for a number of tanners a little further south in Jiangxi province. According to reports, seven tanneries there have failed to meet the environmental standards that are in place. Media reports have said that the affected tanneries are: Gangfeng Leather, Xingling Leather and Chemicals, Ruilong Leather, Ruibaojianzhen Leather, Hengfeng Leather, Huanqiu Industrial Co and Xuanyu Leather Co.
