PTA calls for livestock export ban
According to the Pakistan Tanners’ Association (PTA), the future of the country’s leather sector could depend on the way the government responds to the ongoing flood crisis.
Media reports suggest that the floods have seriously damaged the country’s livestock population, with thousands of cattle, goats and sheep having been swept away and crop damage leaving little food for those that survived. Pakistan’s hide and skin supply was already down 25% before the floods as a result of terrorism in the north of the country.
As a result, Agha Saiddain, former chairman of the PTA is urging the government to ban all livestock exports for the indefinite future. Most of the animals killed were in southern Punjab. There are also fears that disease will break out at farms in the area, leading to the deaths of more livestock.
