China reports record beef imports
Chinese beef imports rose 152% in June compared with June 2009 imports, helping to increase the country’s total imports for fiscal 2009-10 by 136% to a record 17,776 tonnes.
Imports of Australian beef to China during the year rose 38% to 5,566 tonnes, representing 31% of total imports. However, Uruguay was the largest supplier of beef during the period, with exports to China totalling 7,801 tonnes, driven by lower beef prices.
Chinese imports of beef from New Zealand and Brazil during the year grew 120% and 186%, respectively, to 3,137 tonnes and 1,272 tonnes.
