A delegation from Indonesia’s trade ministry visited India’s Footwear Design & Development Institute (FDDI) in Noida on August 6. Led by Iriana Trimurty Ryacudu, directorate general of foreign trade, the vistitos saw the FDDI’s testing centre, where a series of chemical and physical tests take place. They also visited the pilot plant, library, classrooms and computer cluster.

The Indonesian leather industry plays an important role in the country's economic development and is a labour-intensive sector. Most of the country’s processing and manufacturing industries are made up of small- and medium-sized enterprises.

East Java and Jogyakarta are its two main provinces for leather products. The largest production centre for leather bags and travel goods is in Tanggulangin Village, in Sidoarjo. Another popular centre for leathergoods is Bantul in Jogyakarta Province. Prior to the economic crisis of 1997, the Indonesian footwear industry was one of the major contributors to the country’s economic growth.

“The objective of the visit of delegation was to know about the entire system of footwear industry in India including the best practices and appropriate technology which can be replicated in Indonesia so that the Indonesian footwear industry is in a position to contribute further to the national economy as the main source of foreign exchange,” said Rajeev Lakhara, managing director at the FDDI.
