Floods lead to livestock losses in Pakistan
Floods that hit Pakistan at the beginning of August have claimed lives, destroyed property and impacted on local businesses, including many in the leather sector.
According to the Pakistan Tanners’ Association (PTA), the country’s leather sector is suffering because so many livestock were killed during the floods. It claims raw material availability is down by approximately 30%. It is believed that around 25% of all livestock in Punjab and Sindh have died, and the lack of food and shelter will make it difficult for the remaining herds to survive.
At least 1,600 people have died in the floods and more than 14 million people have already been affected. With the monsoon rains showing little sign of abating, there are fears that the death toll could continue to rise.
