Jobs lost at UK leather factory

06/08/2010

The volcanic ash crisis caused by an eruption in Iceland appears to have been the final nail in the coffin for UK-based leather unit George Stuart.

The company, which produced belts for high-street chain Next, was already struggling to survive the economic downturn and had to cut jobs in June. However, the ash problem, which grounded flights and prevented the company from receiving shipments of the leather and components it needed, struck the final blow.

There were hopes that George Stuart would be bought, but no buyer was found and the remaining 70 employees at the plant have now been made redundant.
