Indian leather exports slide

02/08/2010

Despite the recent recovery for Indian leather exports, the sector experienced further declines in June.

Exports fell 3% to Rs12.6 billion ($272.6 million) compared with June 2009 figures, largely as a result of currency changes. While finished leather and leathergoods exports rose, saddlery and harness exports and shoe component exports were hard hit.

The weak euro, in particular, has hampered exporters as 60% of Indian leather exports are shipped to the EU. Last year, exports of Indian leather to Europe totalled approximately $3.5 billion.

The country’s leather exports rose 29% year-on-year during April and May.
