Packer closes two abattoirs in Mato Grosso

Reports from Brazil say a total of 440 workers have been laid off as a result of the closures, which Pantanal says is down to a shortage of animals coming to slaughter and the high price of those that are available. It said the move is temporary, although it has not given a time-frame for re-starting operations at the two sites.
The owner of the company, Luiz Antônio Freitas Martins, said: “We decided to stop operations in these two places because the immediate outlook for them isn't favourable and we are, at this time, still in a position to meet all our obligations with suppliers and the workforce. There isn't sufficient supply [of cattle] at the moment, and to make matters worse, the price of the animals that are coming to slaughter is high, while the price we can receive after slaughter is low. If we kept operations going, we would run the risk of not being able to pay suppliers and workers further down the line.”
