Angora goat under protection

Turkey’s ministry of agriculture has claimed official status for the angora goat, whose name comes from the region around Ankara, the country’s capital.

As well as being sought after in the textile industry for its thin, silky hair, also known as mohair, the raw, wet-salted skins are used after slaughter for upper leather production and for home decoration purposes.

The ministry said it wanted to win recognition of the goat’s Turkish origin. It has restricted live exports to keep quality high and to control a hoped-for increase in population. In 1980s the population of Angora goat was 3.6 million head, but the total is now 1.3 million.
