Flowers that will last for ever

The Scottish Leather Group (SLG) pulled out all the stops when a member of the UK royal family opened the group’s new thermal energy plant at its site in Bridge of Weir on July 15.

Even flowers presented to guest of honour, Princess Anne, on the day were made of leather. SLG commissioned Glasgow-based florist Enid Reid to design a series of floral decorations using green flowers and leaves, but with every other touch of colour coming from leather. Ms Reid’s designs included blue eryngium, yellow and tan calla lilies, aspidistra leaves and roses all made from leather.

She said afterwards: “It was a real honour to be asked to produce flowers for this event and make a bouquet for the princess. The fact that I had to make them in leather added to the excitement of the challenge. I was very proud to be called by SLG chairman, Jonathan Muirhead, after the event to tell me that the princess had thanked him for the bouquet and said she had taken it home. I know the smell of the leather was fabulous and unlike real flowers, this bouquet will last forever.”
