Beef consumption rises in Japan in May

26/07/2010
Newly released figures show that Japan consumed more than 61,000 tonnes of beef during the month of May, a 3% increase on the same month last year.

Industry sources in Japan say that the high value of the Australian dollar has led to a decrease in imports from there. The price of a kilo of imported Australian beef in May 2010 was 9% higher, at $4.68 per kilo, than in May last year.

This contributed to an increase in the consumption of Japanese beef in the domestic market, more than 30,000 tonnes, 9% more than in May 2009.
