Bahia to have 15 new abattoirs

23/07/2010
The Brazilian state of Bahia is to build 15 new, small abattoirs in different towns. The state government’s minister of agriculture, Eduardo Salles, made the announcement on July 20. Bahia already has 30 abattoirs, all of which will continue in operation.

The state government said it was taking this step as part of its efforts to stamp out clandestine cattle slaughter and to gaurantee that the meat reaching consumers’ tables is in a fit condition.

The new facilities will have capacity to slaughter between 30 and 100 head of cattle a day. They will be built by each of the towns based on a model that the state government will provide. They will be run by co-operatives involving livestock farmers, retailers and local authorities.
