Leather interiors help Ford post profits

Automotive company Ford has reported a profit for the second quarter of the year of $2.6 billion. The company has made $4.7 billion in the first six months of 2010, its largest first-half profit since 1998, and has now had five consecutive profitable quarters.

Bloomberg said chief executive, Alan Mulally, had overhauled Ford’s line-up, redesigning cars such as the Taurus and Fusion, and adding extras like heated leather seats and voice-activated electronics. An increase in quality led to customers paying 14% more for Ford vehicles in June 2010 than five years ago.

It quoted Standard & Poor’s analyst Efraim Levy as saying: “Ford took advantage of the automotive depression to elevate its brand in the eyes of consumers.”
