Agricultural industry sources in Argentina have said cattle slaughter in the country’s abattoirs is down by 20.5% so far this year compared to the same period in 2009.

Argentinean abattoirs have slaughtered almost 5.1 million head of cattle so far this year, which is the lowest by this stage since 2003. May’s total, 914,500 head, was down by 5% on May last year.

The average per capita consumption of beef in Argentina is also going down, the same agricultural industry sources said, from 70 kilos per person per year to a level of around 55 kilos.
