Prisoners will earn money from leathergoods

The authorities in Colombia have opened a new women’s prison in the city of Medellín, one of whose trademarks will be the opportunity it will offer inmates to earn money from what they can make in prison workshops, including leathergoods.

A leather workshop will be an important part of the labour activity at the new San Cristóbal prison, to which inmates from the city’s older Buen Pastor facility are being moved.

Colombia’s president, Álvaro Uribe, opened the new jail at an official ceremony on July 21.
