Tannery workers halt sit-in

Workers at a tannery in Uruguay have ended a sit-in protest, which came after the company, Paycueros, announced it was laying off 73 people.

The protest involved a sit-in at the tannery in Paysandú, Uruguay’s third-largest city. The trade union involved agreed to end the action on July 16 after talks involving the country’s labour ministry.

During the discussions, Paycueros made it clear that it would not go back on the decision and a group of more than 230 workers who are not members of any trade union, approached a judge in the town to ask for the forced removal of their colleagues to allow them to carry out their day’s work.
