Buckman names Edward Weiss Memorial Award winner

16/07/2010
A relative newcomer to specialty leather chemicals firm Buckman, Marcelo Fraga de Sousa, has been announced as this year’s winner of the Edward Weiss Memorial Award. This internal global merit award is given annually in recognition of individual excellence in the company in the fields of research, applications technology, marketing or technical support and sales.

Mr Fraga de Sousa is the technical manager at Buckman’s Sumaré
office, but also has responsibility for the application laboratory the company runs in Franca—both facilities are in the state of São Paulo. He travels extensively providing technical assistance on Buckman Beamhouse and Tanyard System (BBTS) applications. The company claims BBTS is rapidly becoming a benchmark for raw-to-wet blue processing worldwide. Marcelo Fraga de Sousa is frequently sought out by tanners and Buckman sales associates for his opinions and experience in solving problems and optimising processes. He has a chemical engineering background and prior to joining Buckman had worked in the tanning sector and with a biotechnology supply company.

Edward Weiss was a pioneer of leather science. He was hired by the company’s founder, Dr Stanley Buckman, to take microbicide products into the leather industry and help solve some of the problems experienced by tanners. His efforts would eventually span the globe and make leather a core business segment for Buckman.
