Catalonia should have more exporting companies

A study carried out by the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce has found that there are around 11,000 manufacturing companies in Catalonia that could export their products but are not doing so at the moment.

Just over 20,000 firms bring in more than 80% of Catalonia’s export revenues, with tanneries and leathergoods and footwear manufacturers well represented among them. But the study found that 7,000 Catalan manufacturing firms and another 4,000 in the services sector were not exporting at the moment, even though they had what the Chamber of Commerce called “an ideal export profile” because of their size and because of international demand for their products and services.

The business organisation said it wanted to help around 30% of these companies become exporters in future and encouraged financial institutions to give them easier access to credit.
