US to lift Brazilian beef ban

Reports from Brazil suggest the United States Department of Agriculture may be preparing to end a ban on beef imports from Brazil.

US authorities said that a consignment of Brazilian beef from JBS had been refused entry to the country because it contained higher than permitted levels of a parasite control product called Ivermectina. Animal health experts in Brazil have since called into question the methodology used in the analysis.

Brazil’s agriculture minister, Wagner Rossi, has said the US is almost ready to allow exports to start up again, but wants to see test data to show the problem has been eradicated. Brazilian packers have been compiling the data and sending it to the authorities in the US. Mr Rossi said 15 or 20 more days’ results would be enough to convince the US to lift the ban.
