New Zealand and Uruguay are the big winners in a beef boom that is taking place in China.

The Chinese Customs Bureau has revealed that beef imports to the country increased by 30% in the first five months of this year compared to the same period in 2009. Official statistics show that China imported 5,696 tonnes of beef over the period, with Uruguay and New Zealand the countries of origin with the biggest growth in their market share.

Uruguay's exports tripled to reach 2,780 tonnes, 49% of the total, while New Zealand increased its shipments of beef by 30% to 1,155 tonne. This coincided with a decline in beef exports to China from Brazil and Australia of 27% and 26% respectively. Brazil exported only 261 tonnes, a 5% share, over the five-month period.
