Concession for Sri Lankan leather footwear companies

07/07/2010
Sri Lanka exported leather, leathergoods and footwear with a value of $6.6 million between January and March 2010 compared to $8.8 million for the same period in 2009, a fall of 25.3%, according to data released by the country's customs authorities.

Manufacturers of leather footwear in Sri Lanka have welcomed the government's decision to withdraw 2.5% duty on the import of footwear machinery and raw materials. The chairman of the Leather Footwear Advisory Council, Rangith
Hettiarachchy, told local media that the tax concession will strengthen local businesses and give them more capacity to supply the domestic and international markets. He said it would enable smaller footwear producers to export shoes.
