Princess to open tannery thermal energy plant

The Princess Royal, daughter of the queen, will unveil and officially open the plant, marking the £6 million investment, which represents the first phase of a ‘zero waste’ strategy the group has put in place.
In 2009, the group reduced its carbon footprint for the fifth successive year. It has now decreased its footprint by 20% overall and has received an Energy Efficiency Award from not-for-profit organisation the Carbon Trust for its efforts.
The thermal energy plant will aim to use more than 25,000 tonnes of waste form the group each year to produce energy that the Bridge of Weir facility will consume on site.
Earlier this year, Bridge of Weir Leather was named Tannery of the Year for Europe for 2009.
