Closed tanneries pass inspection
05/07/2010
The Times of India said the inspection team had included the state’s chief environmental engineer, Rajiv Upadhyay. Nine of 12 tanneries inspected were found to have taken the required measures to curb pollution; three had not.
The newspaper quoted Radhey Shyam, regional officer for the board, as saying: “The team inspected these tanneries and checked the functioning of primary effluent treatment plants (PETP), chrome recovery treatment plants (CRTP) and aerators. The chief environmental engineer thoroughly inspected the 12 tanneries and found that three of them had still not totally complied with the pollution norms. There was shortage of space for discharge of the sludge, the treatment plants too were found to be functioning in one room, following which those tanneries would not be allowed to carry on work.”
It gave no indication of when the tanneries that had passed the inspection might be allowed to start production again.
