Kangaroo leather sees Uruguay through

Uruguay qualified for the semi-finals of the FIFA 2010 World Cup on July 2 after Sebastián Abreu scored the decisive spot-kick in a penalty shoot-out with Ghana. The match finished 1-1 after extra time.

The player announced in the build-up to the World Cup in South Africa that he would wear specially designed boots at the event. The boots, called Loco 13 after his nickname (which means Crazy Guy) and his unusual choice of lucky number, are made from kangaroo leather, which is popular among sports footwear brands because of its softness and strength. Abreu said at the product launch that he was delighted to have boots made from kangaroo leather saying he hoped they would help him jump higher and score more goals for his country at the World Cup.

He featured only sporadically in Uruguay’s run to the quarter-final and had not scored until the shoot-out. Taking the fifth penalty, he knew that if he scored his country would be in the semi-final for the first time since 1970. He calmly chipped the ball in the middle of the goal with his left Loco 13 as Ghana goalkeeper, Richard Kingson, dived to his right.
