Brazil: slaughter rate up by 9% in Q1
01/07/2010
In the first three months of 2010, Brazilian abattoirs slaughtered almost 7.1 million head of cattle.
This figure represents a decline of 5.3% in comparison to the fourth quarter of 2009, but the IBGE pointed out that, since, 2007, the number of cattle slaughtered in the first quarter of the year has reduced year on year; the total for 2010 breaks that sequence, and the slaughter for the first quarter of this year is a return to the levels of the first quarter of 2006.
The number of raw hides reaching Brazilian tanneries in the first quarter was, at 8.5 million, higher than the slaughter total, owing to the fact that a large proportion, 63.1%, came from storage facilities run by big packer companies from cattle slaughtered last year. Traders supplied 26.4% of the hides on the market and the IBGE attributed 10.5% to "other sources".
The hide figures are 10.4% higher than for the first quarter of 2009.
