India sets up leather sector support group

30/06/2010

India’s labour and employment ministry has set up a new working group to tackle issues faced by the country’s leather workers.

With the help of the ministry of social justice and empowerment, the group will look at introducing new legislation surrounding working conditions and sanitation. It will submit its findings on September 30.

The government feels the leather industry is not sufficiently regulated at present and that there should be a proper framework to ensure working conditions and health and safety standards are up to scratch.

Similar working groups already support workers in the construction, tobacco and farming sectors.
