Nigerian union voices security concerns

Nigeria’s National Union of Chemical, Footwear, Rubber, Leather and Non-Metallic Products Employees (NUCFRLANMPE) says it is becoming increasingly concerned about security in the country.

A spate of kidnaps have recent taken place, with the South Eastern states of Abia, Anambra, Enugu, Ebonyi and Imo among the kidnap ‘hotspots’. Victims have included both Nigerian and international business people.

According to the union, many of its members work and live in these troubled spots and, in addition to the kidnapping risks, many have become unemployed because of the lack of security and infrastructure. A number of factories have closed down altogether. Units that are still up and running face having their raw materials and finished goods hijacked during transportation.
