The highlight of the event was a three-hour business networking session, which helped to build links between companies from the two countries.
The event was officially opened by HH Princess Lalla Joumala Alaoui, Moroccan ambassador to the UK, who was joined on the platform by a number of important industry figures such as Timothy Morris, UK Ambassador to Morocco, and Alistair Burk, under secretary of state at the foreign office.
A spokesperson for Maroc Export, the government body that promotes Moroccan exports, said: “The Morocco British Trade Day is part of an ongoing programme of events that are building commercial relationships between Morocco and the UK. The relationship with the UK is very important to us. Trade between the two countries has tripled during the last 10 years and the UK is now our fourth trading partner after France, Spain and Italy.”
Morocco’s leather sector has grown rapidly since the 1980s. It comprises 360 companies employing more than 17,500 workers. In 2009, the sector was worth £216 million ($321 million).
