At a recent meeting at the Russian consulate in Karachi, consul general Andrey Demidov said his country was able and willing to help Pakistan during its current energy crisis. Mr Dermidov said Russia would allow Pakistan to make use of its vast coal reserves in Baluchistan and Thar in a bid to strengthen relations between the two countries.

According to the consul general, a Russian-Pakistani intergovernmental commission on trade and economic, scientific and technical cooperation is expected to start operating in the near future. This statement was welcomed by president of the Pakistan-Russia Business Forum, Abdur Rauf Tabani.

Mr Tabani said there was huge potential for cooperation between the two countries. Bilateral trade currently stands at around $400 million, but he believes the Russian market offers much greater potential for leather apparel, leathergoods and textile exporters based in Pakistan.
