Tannery closures in India
Media reports in India claim four leather manufacturing units in the country have been forced to suspend operations.
The reports suggest the tanneries were closed by local authorities and the Pollution Control Board (PCB) at Jajmau in Kanpur.
The allegation against the tanneries is that they have been releasing polluted water into the Ganges and, despite several warnings, have failed to install the required effluent treatment plants.
The four tanneries are believed to be Samsun, Khatun, Leather Line and Nafiz.
