Xinjiang’s raw hide imports plummet

14/06/2010

Xinjiang imported significantly fewer raw hides in 2009, putting an end to seven consecutive years of growth.

Raw hide and skin imports fell 56% in value to $29.6 million and 60% in volume to 37 million pieces.

The decline has been attributed to the global economic slowdown, higher raw hide and transportation costs and lower leathergoods demand.

Added to this, four of the several tanneries in Xinjiang have been forced to suspend production for six months.
