Bangladesh’s leather exports turn the corner
According to Bangladesh’s Export Promotion Bureau, the country’s crust and finished leather exports rose 16% between July 2009 and April 2010.
Exports totalled around $175 million during the period compared with $151 million during the prior-year period. One of the reasons behind the increase appears to be a major rise in exports of crust and finished leather to China.
Exports have been on the increase since February following a 16-month period of decline. According to the bureau, leather exports rose to $177.32 million in the 2008-09 financial year, up from $284 million in 2007-08.
However, there are still concerns over low demand in the EU and US and over the growing trend for countries to import raw hides rather than finished leather.
