Mixed signals for Brazilian leather sector

09/06/2010

Brazil’s department of foreign trade has reported a 73% increase in leather revenues for May compared with May 2009.

However, May revenues, which totalled $156 million, were down 2% compared with March and April revenues of $159 million.
"At first glance, the drop of 2% may seem insignificant, but somehow is a reflection of the slowdown of rising prices," says Brazilian Tannery Association (CICB) president, Wolfgang Goerlich. According to Mr Goerlich, exporters are now facing increasingly difficult conditions. New problems in international financial markets, this time focusing on the crisis of the European Union, have confirmed the fact that the global economic crisis is not yet over, and that future developments and their consequences in the main consumer markets, including China, are unpredictable," he says.
