Guangdong leather association says brand promotion must improve

According to president of the Guangdong Leather Industry Association, He Xiaocha, leather producers in the area must work on improving brand awareness by building their sales networks. However, he also believes the government must get behind leather manufacturers if the industry is to thrive.

Reports indicate that Guangdong’s leathergoods production and export figures declined for the first time in ten years in 2009. Leathergoods exports fell 11.3% last year.

After footwear, leathergoods represent the second largest export segment for the region. However, with 60% of producers still relying on exports, many are suffering from continuing problems in the US and Europe. Leather shoe production in Guangdong reportedly fell 25.1% last year.

So far this year the association claims demand for leather shoes and bags is relatively stable, while leather garment demand is on the decline and leather furniture demand has increased.
