Vietnam export target may be too high
Representatives from the leather and footwear industry in Vietnam have suggested that the 2010 export target for the sector may be unattainable.
The target for the year is $5.3 billion; however, experts at a recent seminar in Ho Chi Minh said this would be difficult to achieve, as would proposed targets for the near future.
Exports reportedly fell 16% last year to $4 billion. While the government believes a 30% rise will be seen this year, industry experts remain sceptical.
Speakers at the event included Do Chi Tien, deputy director of Phu Lam Shoe Company, Nguyen Huu Thuan chairman of Lefaso (Vietnam’s leather shoe association), Ngo Dai Quang, head of the Leather Shoe Research Institute and Nguyen Nam Hai, deputy minister for industry and trade.
