Sialkot celebrates cleaner leather

28/05/2010
A project to introduce cleaner production techniques in the tanning and leather industry in the Pakistani city of Sialkot has been hailed as a success.

The results of a trial show a 10% reduction in the use of chemicals, a 25% reduction in water use, 20% reduction in waste production and 20%–30% reduction in treatment costs in the tanning industry.

As a result, Sialkot has set up a facility called the Cleaner Production Centre (CPC) and has also established a chrome recovery plant to recover chrome from effluent.

Local media reported that UNIDO industrial development officer Ivan Kral has said his organisation will offer technical and financial assistance to give a boost to the leather and tanning industry in the city by helping it produce in a cleaner way. He made this assurance while addressing separate meetings held at the Pakistan Gloves Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PGMEA) and the Tannery Association.
