Wet weather warning over leather in China

A specialist anti-mould technology provider has warned companies sourcing leather furniture and footwear in China that extra steps to prevent mould may be necessary owing to unusually heavy rain this spring.

Hong Kong-based Micro-Pak Limited has written to customers in Europe and North America to warn them that they may need to take extra precautions to prevent mould and mildew from developing while products are in transit from China.

There has been torrential rain across the southern China mainland, leaving 10 provinces flooded and more than seven million people affected. Parts of China are experiencing the highest rainfall on record for 100 years with the threat of floods, landslides, thunder, hail and other rainstorm-triggered activity.

The China Meteorological Adminstration (CMA) has forecast that the middle and lower Yangtze River basin will see more wet weather in late May, with parts of Jiangsu, Anhui, Hubei and Guizhou provinces, along with Chongqing municipality, expecting heavy rain or storms. It also warned of the likelihood of more heavy rain in the months ahead, possibly even until November.

"It is therefore extremely important to take all necessary precautions to prevent mould and mildew," Micro-Pak said.

Although the company has a vested interest in promoting the special stickers and sheets it offers to companies shipping goods around the world, companies in Europe especially are likely to take notice of the weather warning after recent court cases involving consumers who suffered skin abrasions from coming into contact with leather sofas and shoes that had been supposedly protected from dampness by the now banned chemical dimethyl fumarate.
