Bolivia: minister promises action on raw material losses

25/05/2010

Bolivia’s minister for productive development, Antonia Rodríguez, has said she will urge the government to take action against the smuggling of raw hides from the country to Chile, Peru, Argentina and Brazil.

She attended a meeting with the president of the small industries association, Gaby Nina Ralde, who later commented: “Our furniture factories, our tanneries and footwear and leathergoods producers are being left without raw material. Everybody knows—although no one seems to want to do anything to stop it—that there are lorries leaving the country with huge volumes of raw hides.”

The minister said she was keen to help small industries put in place any reforms that would be of benefit to the Bolivian people as a whole.
