US bans imports of Japanese beef

25/05/2010
Reports from the US suggest the Department of Agriculture has imposed a ban on imports of beef from Japan following the outbreak of foot and mouth disease there.

The volume of imports of Japanese beef into the US are traditionally small. In 2009, the volume was 310,000 pounds, which had a value of $6 million.

But the ban will add to the pressure the Japanese government has faced since the outbreak of the disease.
