Botswana turns to India for help with leather

24/05/2010
A high-level delegation from the government of Botswana has paid an official visit to the Footwear Design & Development Institute (FDDI) in India to investigate ways of boosting the leather industry, especially for small, medium and micro enterprises, in the African country.

The government of Botswana estimates the country’s livestock population at 2.5 million cattle and 2.1 million goats and sheep. About 80% of the national herd is kept under a communal system while the remaining 20% is raised under a commercial system. About 300,000 bovine hides are produced annually, half by the Botswana Meat Commission (the national abattoir) and half by municipal abattoirs.

An enterprise
called Tannery Industries Botswana has set up a versatile tannery in Lobatse, south of the capital Gaborone, and a finishing plant in the town of Phakalane. The operation is capable of processing all types of hides and skins including cattle, small stock, and game and can produce crust and finished leather.

The FDDI has said it will provide “full support” to enhance the competitiveness of the leather sector in Botswana to allow it to play a role in the global leather market.
