Imports cancelled because of RVF outbreak

The authorities in South Africa have cancelled import permits for venison, beef, mutton and goat meat shipments from abattoirs in neighbouring Namibia after the government there confirmed an outbreak of Rift Valley Fever.

The South African department of agriculture, forestry and fisheries said it had received notification from the Namibian veterinary authorities and had placed trade restrictions on meat imports from Namibia.

"Import permits already issued for the commodities of live RVF susceptible ruminants, including game animals, venison, beef, mutton and goat meat not slaughtered at South African approved abattoirs are considered to be cancelled," the department said in a statement.

RVF is a viral disease of animals that is transmitted by mosquitoes and causes termination of gestation and deaths of young livestock. Humans can become infected from contact with infected animal tissue and, less frequently, from mosquito bites.
